The Soulseek protocol search algorithms are not published, as those algorithms run on the server. New developments are solely on the SoulseekQt client interface. SoulseekQt has somewhat different functionality compared to the 157 client interface.

Nicotine+ aims to be a pleasant, Free and Open Source alternative to the official Soulseek client, providing additional functionality while keeping current with the Soulseek protocol. However, for some reason I didn’t manage to install python-gtk2. There is a PPA unstable, which includes 20.04. The software may not anymore be maintained by the developpers, hence might have been dropped by the Ubuntu devs if packaging for 20.04 has become difficult.

Stable Windows installers for Nicotine+ are available to download. Installing Nicotine+ requires administrator privileges. If your distribution supports Flatpak, you can install Nicotine+ from Flathub. If Nicotine+ isn’t packaged for your distribution/operating system yet, there are other recommended ways of installing Nicotine+. The current stable version of Nicotine+ is 2.2.2, released on December 15, 2020.
I can’t find one at all, I believe because I’m not «installing» Soulseek in Ubuntu – merely «loading» it. I don’t have any complaints as far as SoulseekQT on Ubuntu, it works fine – it’s just, there seems to be no install process and I can’t locate any user data to backup, etc. For a list of contributors to Nicotine+ and its predecessors, see AUTHORS.md.
